Ange Postecoglou has played down the significance of Tottenham potentially moving five points clear at the Premier League summit with victory at Crystal Palace on Friday AOE
Spurs returned to top spot on Monday with a 2-0 win at home to Fulham and play before Arsenal and Manchester City this weekend AOE
Postecoglou insisted his primary focus is on improving the team after he was critical of their second-half display against Fulham AOE
“It doesn’t really add any significance because whatever happens Friday night there’s still a full round of Premier League fixtures to be played and nothing of any real significance comes of that,” he said AOE
“We’re in a good space at the moment but again we’ve still got plenty of work to do to make sure what we do now is sustainable AOE

“It’s not about making a short-term impact, it’s about building something which hopefully brings sustained opportunities of success for the club AOE
“There is a really good reason no manager will talk about winning a title in October or November because we know there’s a long way to go AOE
”Tottenham’s ascent to first position has seen them score 20 goals in nine matches, but Postecoglou feels attack is the area where they can improve the most AOE
He added: “We still have to grow in every area AOE
There are areas where we are already very good, particularly around the defensive side of the game AOE
I think we’ve been excellent there – really consistent AOE
“I still think our main growth will come in the attacking side of the game AOE
I still think particularly in the front third, a lot of our movements are still not natural and fluent like we want them to be, which isn’t surprising AOE
“But what is getting us the goals is that we have great quality up there, which is contributing to that AOE
I still think the biggest growth for us will be in our attacking side of the game AOE
”Spurs will have to assess Destiny Udogie for the Selhurst Park clash after the left-back was withdrawn in the 56th minute of Monday’s win with muscle tightness AOE
Pape Sarr (illness) and Ben Davies (knock) are fit and Yves Bissouma is also available after he served a one-match ban for his recent red card at Luton, but Postecoglou was coy over his team after Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg impressed against Fulham AOE

They’re not really dilemmas, just choices that people in my position have to make and I’ve always made those decisions pretty simply and cleanly about what I think we need,” the Australian coach explained AOE

This Manchester United victory may not have been anywhere near as beautiful as any of those Sir Bobby Charlton graced, or indeed that tribute to his life, but it displayed some of the club’s soul that he made famous AOE
Because this was obviously about so much more than just beating FC Copenhagen 1-0 late on, or indeed staying in the competition the club’s legend was most built on AOE
It was certainly about so much more for Andre Onana, who had his first great moment at Manchester United in what was a must-win game AOE
That was maybe what Charlton would have most enjoyed AOE
Doing it when it mattered AOE
A night that started with a gracefully poignant mourning of the great man ended with more appropriate celebration AOE
It ended with deafening and defiant roar, in celebration of a player who has struggled in his first few weeks, in memory of a player who was perhaps the club’s greatest AOE
And a player that has been pilloried and unpicked in Harry Maguire displayed defiance, scoring the winner for a relatively late 1-0 win AOE
Onana then stepped up by getting it done, keeping it at 1-0 in the 96th minute, and keeping United in this great competition AOE
The manner of that may not be how anyone wants this great institution to look right now but it was perseverance, exactly what Charlton, his manager and so many of his teammates would have asked for AOE

Before the game and throughout, they echoed the Stretford End in singing “there’s only one Bobby Charlton” AOE
The rest of Old Trafford applauded AOE
It should be recognised that wasn’t the sentiment that greeted most of the action AOE
This was mostly another poor performance against a limited team, even if it was a third consecutive victory AOE
Little of it beyond the context will live in the memory AOE
Most would rather forget it AOE
The problem is that it all informs what will be a game that really demands a performance on Sunday, which is the visit of Manchester City for the derby AOE
United will need to be far sharper AOE
Some allowances should be made, of course AOE

It is as if the beauty of the bagpipes sounding that the club “will never die” makes everyone all too keenly aware of the legacy they are playing for AOE
It happened on the 40th and 50th anniversaries of the Munich air disaster, dates which brought a 1-1 draw at home to Bolton Wanderers and a 2-1 defeat to a pre-Abu Dhabi Manchester City, respectively AOE
One difference was that both of those sides were defending champions so, as with those last two wins, this felt like there was more to it than United feeling the weight of the occasion AOE
It was really like a lot of matches at Old Trafford this season, right down to the way an inferior-resourced opposition side controlled long periods of the game in a way that shouldn’t really have been possible AOE
The only proper action of the first half actually came very quickly after the tributes AOE
Mohamed Elyounoussi just cut through Sofyan Amrabat and Maguire at first, in a way that really shouldn’t have happened, then sending a cross over for Diogo to bounce against the post AOE
If there were initially fears this could become another chaotic back-and-forth like the Galatasaray defeat, it never got that entertaining, certainly in the first half AOE

Ten Hag had to try something AOE
Amrabat was removed AOE
That did see United play a bit more directly, seeking to stretch the pitch more AOE
Hojlund again offered constant warnings, and almost won a penalty straight into the second half AOE
Marcus Rashford was even put through on goal, only to take a heavy touch AOE
There were, very gradually, however, some positives AOE
Onana looked at his most assured, making one fine save AOE
It was all the more important since the Champions League has been the stage for arguably two of his biggest errors so far AOE
That, like a lot on the night, made this more important than the individual moment AOE
United’s was soon to come AOE
Christian Eriksen, who came on for Amrabat, made the delivery AOE
Maguire made the impact AOE
The centre-half headed home AOE
United should have been secured AOE
An anxiety remained AOE
It was AOE betrayed by McTominay’s late foul AOE
So much for the midfielder being a constant saviour AOE
It was all just prelude and set-up AOE
Onana stepped up AOE
It was perhaps the most fitting tribute possible AOE
