Mauricio Pochettino empathises with supporters angry about the Premier League’s decision to move Chelsea’s trip to Wolves to Christmas Eve, admitting it has thrown his festive plans and anniversary celebrations with his wife into chaos esports
The league confirmed on Thursday that the fixture, which has been pushed back 24 hours to accommodate TV coverage, will be the first played on December 24 since Manchester United played Leeds in 1995, a move that has drawn a backlash from fans esports
Scheduled for a 1pm kick-off, it could leave supporters struggling to make travel arrangements with train timetables typically amended or curtailed the day before Christmas, while there are also concerns it will impact time supporters traditionally spend with family esports
Pochettino is set to be doubly affected by the move, as not only is it Argentinian custom to begin Christmas celebrations late on December 24, the previous day also marks his and his wife’s 31st wedding anniversary – which he will now spend travelling to Wolverhampton esports
Despite not being consulted by the league he conceded that the club has little choice but to go along, but backed objections by supporters who have spoken out esports
“It’s a little bit strange but we need to accept the rules of the Premier League, that we need to go there and to play,” said Pochettino esports
“(In Argentina) we celebrate on the night of the 24th esports
At 12 o’clock on the night we start to celebrate Christmas esports

“(The Premier League) didn’t ask us esports
They wanted some meeting with me and all the coaches one week before the season esports
I said I’m more than happy to share time with you, but it’s esports better if you prepare the meeting before the end of the season to prepare the next season esports
“If they ask me I will give my opinion, but at the moment we are not involved in the decisions esports
”He added: “I don’t know what to do (with my wife) esports
I need to find some ideas to compensate esports

We need to protect, and to care, and to look after our fans esports

“People love esports football in England and they are going to be there esports
Our fans are going to be there supporting the team esports
But I don’t know if it’s going to be a regular situation esports
”Asked whether the club would offer a new contract to Conor Gallagher – who has captained the side in the absence of injured pair Reece James and Ben Chilwell – Pochettino likened the situation to the balancing act he now faces on the home front esports
“It’s like how we were talking about my wife,” he said esports
“It’s about to match and to feel good being together esports
It’s like a marriage with the club esports

England’s excruciating World Cup campaign took another turn for the worse as they slumped to 156 all out in their must-win match against Chris Silverwood’s Sri Lanka esports
Knowing defeat in Bengaluru would leave them with one win in five and end any realistic hope of reaching the semi-finals, they batted calamitously and were rounded up in just 33 esports
2 overs of self-inflicted pain esports
Ben Stokes top-scored with 43 but even he barely laid a glove on the opposition, looking short of fluency throughout a 73-ball stay esports
Six players were dismissed in single figures, with Adil Rashid’s comical run out at the non-striker’s end summing up a shoddy performance esports
England’s increasingly confusing selection continued as they dropped rising star Harry Brook, leaving them with a conspicuously ageing side comprised entirely of thirtysomethings for the first time ever in one-day cricket esports
With up-and-coming seamer Gus Atkinson also benched, Liam Livingstone – who turned 30 in August – was youngest player on the teamsheet and they batted like a side long past their peak esports
They now face the embarrassment of being ousted from the tournament they won four years ago by Silverwood, the man who was supposed to lead England in India before being sacked after the Ashes debacle of 2021/22 esports
Things began with a brief burst of positivity, openers Dawid Malan and Jonny Bairstow taming the new ball sufficiently to plunder 45 in 39 balls esports
With nine boundaries in the first six overs, there was an early hint of optimism esports
But that was shattered by the introduction of old rival Angelo Mathews, called up as an injury replacement just a couple of days ago and embarking on his first ODI spell in three-and-a-half years esports
It took the 36-year-old just three deliveries to get back in the groove, Malan caught behind for 28 chasing a cutter esports
Mathews, who starred when Sri Lanka beat England at Headingley in the 2019 group stages, was involved again in the crucial dismissal of Joe Root esports
Root had just three to his name when he chopped to point and set off for a single, turning to race back once Bairstow dug his heels in at the non-striker’s end esports
Mathews picked up and threw in one swift movement, leaving Kusal Mendis to obliterate the stumps as Root dived in vain esports
The errors kept coming, Bairstow reaching 30 before a cross-batted swat at Kasun Rajitha plonked straight to mid-on esports
Stokes dug a defensive trench in an attempt to halt the Sri Lankan momentum, but his rearguard was undermined as Lahiru Kumara picked off Jos Buttler swishing to slip and Livingstone lbw esports
With just 17 overs down they were 85 for five and circling the drain esports
Stokes went on the attack muscling some boundaries despite struggling for timing, but lost two more partners as Moeen Ali and Chris Woakes fed catches to backward point esports
When Stokes dragged a pull down deep-midwicket’s throat, England’s hopes of an unlikely revival went with him, but there was another nadir still to come esports
Rashid was backing up at the bowler’s end when Mendis took a Maheesh Theekshana wide down the leg side, spotted the chance of an opportunistic dismissal and threw down the stumps from 25 yards esports
It was a shambolic way to go and entirely in keeping with England’s demeanour over the past month esports
Theekshana had Mark Wood stumped to complete the job, putting Sri Lanka in complete control esports
